FAQs

  • You will know therapy is working when you grow in these ways:

    1. Seeing your thoughts with enough distance that you can choose what to do next, regardless of your mind's chatter.

    2. Noticing the story you've constructed about yourself and gaining perspective about who you are.

    3. Allowing yourself to feel even when the feelings are painful or create a sense of vulnerability.

    4. Directing attention in an intentional way rather than automatically, noticing what is present here and now, inside yourself and out.

    5. Choosing the qualities of being and doing that you want to become, not following someone's else's script (e.g. society, family).

    6. Creating lasting habits that support these choices.

These 6 skills can be seen as 6 dance steps working together fluidly to create 1 lively dance: Psychological Flexibility

Psychological Flexibility = The ability to be present, open up, and do what matters.

The heart of this dance (psychological flexibility) can be summed up in 1 question/invitation:

“In this very moment, will you accept the sad and the sweet, hold lightly stories about what is possible, and be the author of a life that has meaning and purpose for you, turning in kindness back to that life when you find yourself moving away from it?”

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) (said as the word “act” and not the initials A-C-T) is a style of therapy that is about taking action guided by your deepest values.

Through ACT you unpack existential questions about yourself such as, “What do you want to stand for in life?”, “What really matters deep in your heart?”, “What do you want to be remembered for at your funeral?”

  • My friend, I’m so glad you asked! Here’s how:

We all know there is no delete button on painful emotions and memories—they are a part of life. ACT is true to real-life and does not claim or pretend that we can “feel good all the time.” ACT teaches us psychological skills to handle painful thoughts and feelings in such a way that they have much less impact and influence on us.

ACT helps us clarify what is truly meaningful and essential to us —that is, our values— and use that knowledge to guide, inspire, and motivate us to set goals and take action that enriches our lives.

ACT empowers us to start living fully now: ACT challenges the assumption, you must get rid of your symptoms before you can live a better life. In our imperfect world, even our best moments will never be perfectly symptom-free. Waiting until things are perfect guarantees perpetual dissatisfaction via grass-is-greener syndrome. The truth is, whatever situation you are going through, you will experience BOTH pain AND at the same time you can still live fully, vibrantly, with joy and peace. It’s BOTH/AND and not EITHER/OR. My friends, joy is in the midst.
